12-12-12 a Popular Wedding Date

Marriage licenses are up at the Milwaukee County Courthouse, and across the world.

Couples across the country are bucking the belief that today, Dec. 12, 2012, or 12-12-12, will mark the end of the world, and instead are getting married on a date that comes just once every 100 years.

Well, every date comes just once every 100 years: the last 12-11-12 or 12-13-12 came back in 1912 and won’t happen again until 2112, but they don’t have the same ring as 12-12-12.

Speaking of rings, ABC News reported David’s Bridal, the popular wedding dress retailer, estimated 7,500 people across the country were getting married today, and special wedding ceremonies were happening across the globe, including mass ceremonies in Hong Kong.

Locally, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported at least 27 couples are expected to get married at the Milwaukee County Courthouse today, four and a half times as many as a typical Wednesday.

That number is down from the last trifecta wedding day of 11-11-11, when the county clerk told TMJ4 that 57 couples filed marriage papers. That day, however, was a Friday.

Of course, those who do get hitched today, might encroach on Britney Spears’ 2004 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander, at least in terms of length, or lack thereof. That’s because 12-12-12 marks the end of the Mayan calendar, according to some interpretations, and the end of the calendar has been associated with end of the world.
