Construction barrels will line Capitol Drive from Mayfair Road west to Brookfield Road next year, as state transportation officials improve the five-mile stretch from April to October.

Two of the three existing lanes will remain open for traffic in each direction of Capitol Drive from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the construction project. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., one lane in each direction will remain open. 

According to plans presented at a public information meeting Tuesday night at the Brookfield Public Safety Building, the work will be broken down into three segments, starting with the stretch of Capitol Drive from Mayfair Road to the 124th Street border that divides Brookfield and Wauwatosa.

The second segment will be from 124th Street to Brook Lane, and the final one from Brook Lane to Brookfield Road at the Sendik's Towne Centre.

Other project details included:

• Pilgrim Road ramps might be closed during the nighttime hours from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., and signs will be posted at least 10 days before such closures occur.
• Calhoun Road might be closed to northbound traffic for up to 10 days, and a detour route will be posted.
• Lilly Road might be closed for up to 35 days, with a detour route created.
• The driveway to St. Dominic's Church might be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at some point to do curb and gutter work on the south side of the Capitol Drive intersection with Imperial Drive. A second driveway will remain open at that time.
• Menomonee River Parkway will be closed when the DOT demolished and re-decks a westbound Capitol Drive bridge over the Parkway. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be given another access to the Milwaukee County Oak Leaf Trail but full closure might occur at night time hours.
• Some median openings on Capitol Drive may be closed at times during construction, but two consecutive median openings will not be closed at the same time.

Once that project is complete, the state plans to continue work on three miles of Capitol Drive from Brookfield Road west to Highway 74. But that work is not scheduled until 2017.

The state also is studying whether to expand Capitol Drive from four lanes to six from Brookfield Road to Highway 74.
