Gas Tank Getaways: Atwater Beach and Park

Explore Shorewood's breathtaking park overlooking Lake Michigan

 

Situated on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, Atwater Park is the gem of Shorewood. Playing host to annual village traditions including the Shorewood Men's Club Chicken BBQ, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Shorewood's Concert Band series. The Plensa sculputure from Spanish artist Jaume Plensa greets spectators they enter the park and there's even a park for the children.

Atwater Beach is where you go to stick your toe in cold Lake Michigan and then lie on the sand and tan in the summertime. Both the Park and Beach are getting makeovers including a new boardwalk on the beach. 

Where: 4000 N Lake Dr, Shorewood, WI 53211. At the intersection of North Lake Drive and East Capitol Drive. 

When: Daily, 5am - 10pm

How much: Free

Special treat: The park has an interpretive sign with lots of information and graphics about a historic shipwreck, the Appomattox, which ran aground in 1905 and is a popular diving site not far offshore.
