Late Filing Adds Another Primary Race to Wauwatosa Elections

Latest filings make for a third contested Common Council race and one that will require a primary vote.

Wauwatosa's election season got somewhat more interesting with a couple of late candidate filings that make for another contested Common Council election and another that has now become a three-way primary race.

The deadline for filing passed at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and with that the full and final slate of candidates is set, assuming they all stay in the race.

Joining on the District 1 ballot is new candidate Bob Smith. They will vie for the seat being vacated by Ald. Linda Nikcevich and one will be eliminated in a Feb. 21 primary.

The other new development is the declaration of Joel Tilleson in District 5, where he will take on incumbent Michael Walsh.

Ealier, that he will challenge incumbent Ald. Jacqueline Jay in District 3.

Those two races, with only two candidates each, will not need to be on the primary ballot. The candidates can start immediately looking forward to the general election on April 3.

Also requiring a primary contest is the election of Wauwatosa's next mayor. No new candidates have announced, but three who had already declared they would run have made their filings.

, a sales and marketing specialist for a printing firm, announced in October that he would run. of District 1 announced his candidacy shortly after former Mayor Jill Didier announced on Dec. 1 that she would be stepping down. Then, on Dec. 22, , the director of the Village of Wauwatosa Business Improvement District, said she would also run.

Moldenhauer had announced on the same day Donegan did that he would run for mayor, but after Ehley joined the race he decided to drop out and pursue his district aldermanic seat instead, citing a crowded field that would make for "a shoot-out."

The mayor will earn $30,000 per year over a four-year term, a .

The following incumbent aldermen have all filed without opposition for re-elction to their districts:

  • Eric Meaux, District 2
  • Dennis McBride, District 4
  • Jeff Roznowski, District 6
  • Cheryl Berdan, District 7
  • Jason Wilke, District 8

Aldermen earn $4,200 annually over four-year terms.

Meaux, as Common Council president, takes over Tuesday night as acting mayor of Wauwatosa as Didier has officially stepped down.
