Scott Walker Recall Voter Turnout Crushes Gubernatorial Records
Turnout of nearly 58 percent was highest ever for a gubernatorial race in a non-presidential year, but still fell short of the numbers in recent presidential elections.
Wisconsin's gubernatorial recall election was historic in more ways than one.
Yes, the June 5 election between Gov. Scott Walker and Democrat Tom Barrett was the first attempt to recall a governor in Wisconsin history — and only the third time in the nation.
But it also set the record for the highest turnout in a Wisconsin governor's race in which the office of president was not also on the ballot.
Final certified numbers released Wednesday show that 2.516 million votes were cast in the recall election — or 57.8 percent of the state's voting-age population, according to the state Government Accountability Board, which oversees Wisconsin elections.
That's the highest turnout for a gubernatorial election since 1960 — when the presidential race between Democrat John Kennedy and Republican Richard Nixon also was on the ballot. Turnout in that election was 73 percent, the highest since the state started tracking turnout in 1948.
How did your community vote in the recall? Find out with our interactive search tool
Prior to 1970, Wisconsin elected its governor every two years. The governor is now elected every four years, when there is no presidential race on the ballot.
The June 5 turnout dwarfed the turnout in the 2010 election between Walker and Barrett, where 49.7 percent of adults showed up at the polls. It was also the highest turnout for a gubernatorial election in the last 50 years.
While the numbers were big, they weren't quite as high as the GAB had projected in the days leading up to the election.
The board projected a turnout of between 60 percent and 65 percent, although it acknowledged the difficulty of making a projection because Wisconsin had never had a statewide recall before.
Nor was the turnout anywhere near was it was in the 2008 presidential election, when 69.2 percent of the voting-age population showed up at the polls.
In addition to releasing the turnout figures, the GAB Wednesday also certified the final results of the elections for governor, lieutenant governor and three of the four state Senate recall races. The 21 District race between Republican Van Wanggaard and Democrat John Lehman is being recounted in Racine County.Wanggaard is challenging the results, which show that he lost by more than 800 votes.
The final results in the governor's race show Walker with 1,335,585 votes (53.08 percent); Barrett with 1,1164,480 votes (46.28 percent); and independent candidate Hari Trivedi with 14,463 votes (0.06 percent).
Republican Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch had 1,301,739 votes (52.89 percent) and Democrat Mahlon Mitchell received 1,156,520 votes (46.99 percent).

Democracy? When Walker spent 6 times in financing, than his opponent “OR” has the state been auctioned off? Suppression of voter registrations and gerrymandering with biases? Democracy or in tune with Roberts Ruling in 2010 of unlimited funds from corporations to buy the candidates of their choice?
Mussolini described Fascism as the “Incorporation of the Corporations to the state” Time has come for the public to demand a cap on expenditures on all elected officials, that is in ratio to the office they seek. Perhaps then we could have level field to play out our Democracy…

It was nonsense to have a recall because some people didn't/don't agree with his policies. If it had been based on a criminal act of some kind, I could understand. That's what elections are for. The unions were busing in people from all over the place, and trashing Madison, which started the whole mess. I say the unions should pay back the millions in taxpayer dollars that it cost the taxpayers of Wisconsin to conduct this recall, along with the damage repairs. If after his term, the majority wants a change, than so be it.

And never forget the power of $25 million in unregulated Super PAC donations can be used to blanket the sound and airwaves in favor of one candidate. Don't forget the time and effort spent in clouding the issues and casting doubt to favor one candidate. And don't forget that Diane Hendricks wants Wisconsin to be a Right to Work for Less state. And Scott Walker is all about doing what his benefactors tell him to do.
Don't forget that democracy is not one party in control.

Bren, that's BS. The spending was nearly equal on both sides from all the latest reports. The only one who was clouding the issues was Barrett. He never has stood for anything and never will.
It's not just Diane Hendricks that wants a Right to Work state. I would say the vast majority of those that support Walker do. And what is wrong with that. If it is your right to belong to a union, why is it not my right not to belong to one.
And yes, usually those that support someone do so because they agree with them. You seem to forget, that it is Walker who is the leader and we believe in him.
And to your last statement, spoken like a true loser.

Brian, if comparing only direct campaign contributions your claim would be correct. If we include Super PAC and other hidden donations the Race to the Bottom folks blew the union donors out of the water.
I think the people who think they want a Right to Work for Less state don't understand how unions set the wage and benefits standards for the private sector.
Right to Work for Less attacks private unions by letting people parasitically suck from the union teat without paying for it. Nice. In RWL states, workers are paid $1,500-$5,000 less per year than other states. So no thanks on that one for me but you can see why Diane likes it.
Sorry, I don't consider someone who checks off the to-do list of a special interest group to be a "leader." Terms that come to mind include "sycophant," "puppet," "sheep," etc. Hm.
As for my last statement, very patriotic to call me-and the Founding Fathers-losers. When my Declaration of Independence-signing ancestor put his life on the line for liberty I don't think he could have imagined the yearning for the return of authoritarianism that has gripped the right-wing fringe. When my ancestor the "Midnight Rider" set down his beer and set off to warn Hancock and Adams of impending arrest, I don't think he, or my ancestor the militia colonel could accept that only 200+ years later there'd be people willing to support sedition for profit. Maybe they would, but probably not.
Steve, any proof on that? ; )
Brian Dey

Bren- And what would you cal people that are forced to join a union? I am pretty sure the Founding Fathers were not interested in forcing people to have to do anything, yet you find it ok for unions to dictate membership, dictate pay, dictate work conditions.
You find it ok for union dues to be used to further advance their leaders political agendas, even when the members don't agree. You find it ok that even though we vote in a secret ballot, unions force an open ballot so they can openly intimidate those that do not want a union.
Like slavery, unions are a thing of the past. Only 11% of the working population are unionized, and it is shrinking. You are out of touch, and living in a dream world of the past. These are not your father's unions. These are selfish thugs that could give a damn about the middle class worker so long as they get theirs at our expense.

The unions poured millions in and the only way they won back the Senate is by cheating in Racine County. But you guys cover it by claiming incompetence and everyone believes because we all know how incompetent liberals are.
You missed the main point entirely. Dems only believe in freedom when it suits their needs to attract voters. Let them kill unborn children; a new voting block. Let illegal aliens come in andgrant them amnesty; a new voter block. Make blacks more dependent on government; a new voter block. grant gay marriages; new voter block. Give the unions whatever they want; new voter block. Get the picture now? Probably not. But the majority is getting it. Proved it with the re-election of Walker. He even waon by a bigger margin. Bren your assessment that the candidates spent equal amounts on their campaigns is false. You ascertain that unions have a negative influence on cost of laborers productivity is false. Actually most of all your comments are false. To deny the rights for laborers to have a voice, in the distribution of the value of their productivity, has been proved to be inefficient.
1970 to the present, as Unions declined, the wage earnings and benefits have run flat, for laborers. Where in as the wealth of that increased productivity of laborers has been assimilated by the 20% of our populace that has enjoyed a 200% increase in their wealth accumulations. Presently 80% of nations wealth is distributed among the 20% and the remaining 80% of our populace has 20% of the laborers productivity wealth to distribute among themselves.
Decline of the middle class is attributed to the laborers inability to have a voice in the distributions of their labors.
Regressing us back to the 1900’s where in Teddy [R] with his Big Stick went about knocking down the Robber Barons and Monopolies. Then passed into law the need for unions to offset the ambiguities of laborers productivity and the wealth it produces. Less we all lose our Democracy

Bernard, your are working off the assumption that unions are still fighting for the members, when in fact they are lining their pockets more and more. Sure, they occasionally get the Democrats to vote an increase in minimum wage (like THAT really affects the membership), but for the most part they just accomplish vary little.
Truth be told, as union concessions added to business expense, business spent more money on technology and outsourcing in order to cut expensive union jobs. And the union has been powerless to stop it. But rather than redefine and reform themselves, they chose to stick with their archaic system in order to keep dues rolling in.
Businesses, on the other hand, are not stupid. What is the point in making a better, cheaper microwave when there is no one in the country that can buy them? In order to create and build wealth, business need to be able to create a product at a reasonable price, yet still have a base that can afford to buy that product.
Unions have been outdated for years. They either need to step into the times, or go the way of the dinosaur!

However we examine the corruptions of our corporations, CEO’s, Wall Street, Banking speculations etc. We may find far greater corruption in those areas that were detrimental to our laborers productivity. Presently they have made concisions on many fronts with reductions in wages and benefits. Where in as the corporations and Wall street have no intentions of paying back Main Street. Although must admit some corporations and banks have paid back or are paying back their loans. [Auto Industry City Bank and a few others] “BUT” for the damage on Main Street nope. Corporations are not stupid goes without saying. “YET” they will seek the greatest profit margin. If it be Mexico or anywhere else with low income laborers. Regardless of the Unions. Are you suggesting that rather than this USA lead the world in laborers productivity values by following the nations that do not provide for the quality of life for their constituents‘? Are we to become the followers of third world countries??
USA is the leader by far in productivity from our laborers and will remain so. You have entered onto the world market from a local concern and so the answerer to that is the removing of the tax breaks for outsourcing and still him them accountable to the IRS for products rendered. Not to stop them but to increase the quality of those that remain and so that they are not penalized by the cheap laborers of the outsourced associate of theirs. This is not a union matter. Whole different ball game here.

LOL so the more unions give up on wages and benefit’s the more it cost the business? Whew that is an oxymoron statement.
Technology is rapidly advancing and businesses will constantly need to revamp to maintain completive edge. Has nothing to do with unions reducing their wages and benefits !!?? I should have been clearer by saying "concessions with unions". One of the options business has if to invest in technology and automation, saving cost on wages and payroll taxes.
Keeping that sort of faith in your union will only lead to disappointment. You need to get your union into the 20th century so it will be a benefit to you and your union brothers!

You libs kill me. Can't run on his record so Obama and the goons try to make things up... Barrett, Obama, Zerban...nothing but empty suits!

Hey Dey. 2010 tax returns is all so far. 2011 who knows? This is Mitt we are commenting on. Waiting since when for tax return on 2011. April 17? Sure .. You say you have business. Well so did I and more than one at that. Now retired. Now when I had to complete some forms and prove my financing and background. I had at times had to provide or expect 5 to 10 years of my records and it was never for the office of president. Now Obama has been transparent in all his dealings the good, the bad, and the ugly. Mitt nope. Covert and just out and out false hoods. If some one was to apply for a job at your place and shows you his 2010 tax record and hopes that is enough. Would a little red flag go up in your mind. When you were expecting a 10 year report. As have all the presidents before him. Remember slicky Dick Nixon and how open he was. Now just what are we to make of old flip flop here.. LOL and you have a business? Perhaps you should consider outsourcing it like Mitty your buddy.

Bernard, Can you tell us what exactly the Obama campaign would like to look at in Romney's records? I don't give anyone any records without an explanation of what they are looking for. The "something to hide" excuse is total BS.

Your moronic post above did not answer the question. Bernard, Can you tell us what exactly the Obama campaign would like to look at in Romney's records?
Go study your UAW newsletter and see if you can find the answer.

Tonto speaks with forked tongue. Not to mention a bumper sticker mentality. Democrats are communist and republicans are Fascist. My daddy can beat up your daddy. Oh yeah your mommy wears army boots and blah, blah it goes. Go back and get yourself some education and then try again.

LOL tonto.. Now we can see where your hunting grounds are. Down at the zoo. Like for someone to form your ideologies. Too lazy to go out and research it. All you have is propaganda from the Pied Piper and his dancing prancing Fox. Do you think that your FOX does not lie? Is that it?
http://youtu.be/Yn7_8QL2weQ or how about how your captain America spent his 4th of July with a veteran http://youtu.be/O2KU02lsfH8 or how about their integrity for honesty.
http://youtu.be/qrdfRAaSWj0 Yup all on the accuracy of your sources.
http://youtu.be/qrdfRAaSWj0 or how about some music to sooth your troubled spirits. http://youtu.be/qrdfRAaSWj0
Now head on out and seek the educational spirit that you so desperatly require.

For Tonto and Greg. Gather up your beers and sit yourself right down and watch. Apparently you guys have trouble reading and researching. Perhaps it has something to do by being in your parents cellar and trying to figure out the world with video clips on mommie and daddies computers. So lets start with a test. To see just where is your level of stupidity is. http://youtu.be/d6qIoMjfECo Now how about we have Jesus run to be a republican canidate. http://youtu.be/udzymvKOyCY having fun yet? Tonto is inspired by the Reverend Jeriamai? So how about a debate on that? http://youtu.be/9YxS7oRDQgo Now I suspect you two have moved up to Wisconsin fro either Arizona or Kansas. Am I right?. Sure? http://youtu.be/9cOYlYtAICs Now you guys don't drink. For Sure? Sure smells like it.or perhaps its the tea. http://youtu.be/eqOZ-i3ISX4 Did you have fun? Now go outside and embrace the Real World. It is superior than your comic books and video clips that the Pied Piper has sent you to play with.

Tonto, Tonto, Tonto, Tonto : Now I can see your capacity to comprehend does not exist. Some wires in your brain have become disconnected. You must get that a lot from the people around you. Making fun of you for your latent abilities. So your postulations are archaic and have been already addressed to the satisfaction of the civilized world. Your conspiracy mumbo jumbo is just that. Immaturity.
So I will no longer address your ignorant B.S. and will now give you what I want for you to digest. After a few years it might start to sink in as to just how stupid you are exposing of yourself to those around you.
http://www.facebook.com/note.php ... I call this Obama 101. Now here is a place you can go and idle your time away measuring fact from fiction http://www.politifact.com/florida/statements/... and lets bring a little bit of sunshine into your dark abyss of the Fox’s den. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm... Now here is one. Noticed you like professors. So lets go to an internally renown one. Here is his take on your cronyism supporting B.S. http://youtu.be/2Ux8Q3XC98U This is how your Captain America spent July 4th with our veterans and his contributions to their ….. http://youtu.be/O2KU02lsfH8 This is the creature you have made into a preacher of truth, justice and the American way,!!
