Two young Milwaukee women spent a couple hours filling out job applications at a number of Mayfair Mall stores – and then, with some time still on their hands, went on a shoplifting spree, police say.

At 8:56 p.m. Friday, two Milwaukee women, one 19 and one 20, were arrested on suspicion of theft at Macy’s in Mayfair Mall after they were seen on camera vigorously stuffing numerous children’s items into shopping bags, with no apparent awareness that they might be being watched.

They were detained as they left the store. The younger woman had six items worth $237 retail value, the older had 11 items worth $390.98. Each had one prior conviction for retail theft.

In separate, voluntary statements, each woman said they had come to the mall to fill out job applications, and had spent more than two hours doing so at a large number of stores.

Finding themselves at Macy’s, they both decided to steal some clothing for their young children. The 19-year-old said she had $600 cash with her but didn’t want to spend it.

She, at least, got off with a municipal citation. Because the 20-year-old suspect had attempted to steal more than $250 worth of property, she earned a date to appear in Milwaukee County Circuit Court to face a possible criminal misdemeanor charge.
