Wauwatosa Schools Might Start Right After Labor Day

The Wauwatosa School Board is considering the proposed 2013-14 school calendar that has 180 days of teaching.

Wauwatosa Schools might have classes being September 3, the day after Labor Day.

The Wauwatosa School District is reviewing the proposed 2013-14 school calendar

State law does not allow school districts to begin school before Labor Day.

Labor Day weekend is a popular weekend for tourism. There was 32.1 million travelers during the 2011 Labor Day holiday period, according to AAA.

Wauwatosa Superintendent Phil Ertl expressed frustration at the state law, according to a Wauwatosa Now report.

The district has planned 180 days of teaching. An additional 12 days would be used for snow make-up days and teacher in-service days.

The board will review the report at their Monday meeting.

This law needs to be changed. Starting school after Labor Day is about 7-10 days later than the private schools and colleges in our state and most other states. Such a late start leaves us with a mid-June end date--again way too late. Summer jobs are already taken and started before our kids get out of school. Colleges begin orientation before our seniors are even out of school because it's mid-June. Summer school begins late and, for kids, feels like it goes on forever. Families are taking vacations in June, July and earlly August, not the last week/first week of September. Any family with a student in a sport needs to be around by mid-August for practices. Perhaps this impacts the Wisconsin Dells area, but tourism in the SE Wisconsin area? What's there to do here?

As an annual Labor Day traveler, I like to extend the trip an extra day or two each year. impossible if school has begun. My children participate in summer school, athletics and camps that are all bulked at the front end of summer. August is what's left for our family. Perhaps the answer lies in less days off throughout the school year.
