Liquid Gold Runs in The Village

Is the olive oil you just purchased at your local supermarket spoiled? Josh Saiia, owner of Oro di Oliva, an olive oil tasting bar in the village, says the only way to find out is to taste it.

The idea to sell olive oil started while Josh Saiia and his wife Nichol were on summer vacation with friends. They attended an olive oil tasting, and upon tasting the first oil, the flavor profile stood out as something extraordinary. “The smell of a green meadow started to permeated my plate,” Josh said. “Notes of fresh avocado and sweet clover were totally unexpected, but a pleasant surprise.” Two weeks after that first experience, Josh and Nichol were on a plane to California with a mission to find olive oil that could be sourced directly from the farmer who grew it. “My curiosity piqued after that initial experience,” Josh said. “I just needed to do some grass-roots exploration.” Today, that curiosity has resulted in Oro di Oliva, an …

First County Beer Garden to Be Bigger, Better This Year, Operators Say

Estabrook Beer Garden opened last week, but big changes are on the way that could be lessons to operators of The Landing at Hoyt Park in Tosa.

Last weekend was the first hot weekend of the year, and instinctively, hundreds made their way to the Estabrook Beer Garden to enjoy a cold one – as many more may at Hoyt Park in Wauwatosa by mid-summer. Lessons learned last year at Estabrook could inform customer service at Hoyt if approved to open this year. Although the Estabrook beer garden opened for business on May 15, customers won't get a full taste of what the beer garden has in store this year until the operator – Old German Beer Hall – finishes its renovations. Milwaukee County was so happy with the success of the Estabrook Beer Garden in its first year it has approved a second beer garden at Hoyt Park in Wauwatosa – still going through the City of Tosa approval process, and to …

Hoyt Park Beer Garden Wouldn't Be Tosa's First

Weissbier once flowed with fellowship in what is now Jacobus Park, as Castalia Bottling Works opened its grounds on sunny Sunday afternoons.

If the Friends of Hoyt Park & Pool succeed in bringing a beer garden to the park this summer, it will be at the least second such experiment in sudsy, outdoor gemütlichkeit in Wauwatosa history. Go back 101 years, to a day when gentlemen wore boaters or bowlers and neckties to enjoy a Sunday afternoon – Aug. 25, 1912 – of convivial cheer, music and beer in beautiful Castalia Park. Never heard of it? You would now know it as Jacobus Park. If you are familiar with the place, imagine standing in the area of the playground and wading pool at the east end of the park, but instead of those features there is a bottling plant and brewery in a clearing surrounded by the same bluffs and timber. The Castalia Bottling Works operated in private …

Yesterday I drove past the beer garden in Estabrook Park. Hadn't been through there in years, and I was shocked by how the park has deteriorated and how the new biergarten is not in the most suitable place (or to my mind, most suitable building). But Hoyt has a beautiful facility, well located, and the chance to be a rousing success. When you do these things, you have to do them right. And I …   more ›

Is Whole Foods Coming to Wauwatosa?

Chain specializing in local and organic edibles may open a second Milwaukee-area store in Wauwatosa or Brookfield, Biz Times reports.

Consumers on the metro west side, already treated to the best grocery-shopping options around, may get yet another popular choice. Whole Foods is looking to site its second Milwaukee-area store in either Wauwatosa or Brookfield, according to a report in Milwaukee BizTimes. Among the options under consideration are the Blue Mound Road corridor and The Mayfair Collection development at West Burleigh Street and Highway 45, the report said. The BizTimes cited unnamed sources in commercial real estate for the report but also spoke to an industry analyst who said the move would be logical for Whole Foods and that the affluent west suburbs could support it. That same analyst, David Livingston, a national consultant for the grocery industry, told …

I have lived in North Wauwatosa for the past three years. Prior to that I was within walking distance to the Whole Foods on the East Side, which I loved and miss. I have been hoping that they would consider bringing a store to the Brookfield/Wauwatosa area because with the movement of healthier, clean, organic eating this would be a well-known option to residents in this area. I know I would …   more ›

6 Characteristics Of A Truly Great Workplace

Freedom to be who you are and fulfilling work tend to earn companies on the top lists of best places to work, according to the Harvard Business Review.

The following story was provided by AOLJobs.com  By Claire Gordon What is the perfect place to work? An office where every employee gets an annual 10 percent raise? And nobody ever gets fired? And the CEO knows everyone's name? And there are free massages and volleyball courts and barrels of candy apples? None of the above. Rob Goffee of London Business School and Gareth Jones of IE Business School have spent three years asking hundreds of executives this exact question. Six qualities stood out, they found, which they revealed in this month's Harvard Business Review. And ultimately they seem to boil down to a single nugget: Make employees feel like they're not just mindless slaves of shareholder value.   1. Let You Do You The best company …
