Hart Park Friends Call Out Volunteers to Help with Spring Cleanup

Tosa group teams up with Milwaukee Riverkeeper to rid park of trash and weeds.

Volunteers are welcome for the annual Spring River Cleanup at Wauwatosa’s Hart Park. The event, organized by the Friends of Hart Park Foundation and Milwaukee Riverkeeper, will be from 9 a.m. until noon April 16.

“We’re cleaning along the river and parts of the park, and we hope to also check along the railroad tracks on State Street,” said Carol Wehrley of the Friends of Hart Park Foundation.

“The park is used regularly by joggers, bikers and walkers. The wonderful thing about our Wauwatosa residents is that they pick up trash. When we work at the river, we’ll also pick up debris that has washed up along the banks and pull some noxious weeds, too.”

Volunteers are asked to meet inside the Muellner Building. Bags will be supplied, but volunteers are asked to bring gloves, shears and any supplies they think will be beneficial for the cleanup. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided.

The Friends of Hart Park Foundation is a non-profit organization founded after the park was greatly expanded by the removal of more than 60 homes and businesses for a flood management project. The groups goals are to help support the park's existing features and to promote the development of the new acreage.

Wehrley said that about 50 people have registered for the cleanup so far. Those interested in participating are asked to visit www.milwaukeeriverkeeper.org to register and find additional information.
