Public welcome to ‘rejoice’ with WAUMC Christmas cantata

The public is invited to a free performance of Anders Ohrwall’s Gaudete at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11 at Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church, 1520 Wauwatosa Ave., Wauwatosa, Wis. Parking is available behind the church off of Underwood Avenue.

Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. Ohrwall’s 10 melodies are taken from the Piae Cantiones -- the oldest songbook for Swedish schools dating to 1582. It includes familiar melodies, such as In Dulci Jubilo and Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming.

The work was originally composed for the Youth Choir of Swedish Radio in 1962. It weaves traditional English carols and French Noels together with Bible readings.

Flute, violin and cello will accompany the 25-member Chancel Choir in its performance of these light, airy seasonal songs.
