In Season Finale, Trojans Thrash Cudahy 47-0: Earn Playoff Spot

The Trojans finished the regular season on Oct 18 with great defense, excitement on offense – and a win to get them to the post-season. And while Friday night’s win over the Cudahy Packers saw contributions by the entire team – this night was about the seniors.

All eleven seniors were honored by Tosa West fans, coaches and teammates on Senior Night. They have contributed mightily to the resurgence of Tosa West football, and they are:  Develyn Ferguson, Niko Lewis, Jameson Brock, Roberthenry Davis, Greg Lewis, Jared Morzinski, Eric Chapman, Carlton Ndon, Elliot Rogahn, Tim Meuller and Carlos Morris.

The evening was cool, calm and perfect for football.  Cudahy (2-5 overall) is a young, re-building team. The Trojans knew that a win would keep playoff hopes alive. And on this night the Trojan offense was explosive and the defense stifling.

In the first half, Demaris Purifoy carried the ball five times and scored three touchdowns. He streaked to pay dirt on runs of 18, 21 and 21 yards, finishing the game with 124 yards. This evening’s work gives Demaris a total of 1115 yards in the regular season, second in the conference among all running backs. Truman Tyson finished with 106 yards and one score on 5 carries, Greg Lewis added 76 on 8 carries, and Develyn Ferguson ran once for 18 yards and a score. On the night, the Trojans ran 32 times for a season-high 419 yards, an average of 13 yards per carry.

Trojan passers had a notable bright spot. Once more this season Develyn Ferguson got free on a post pattern and scored from 76 yards – as freshman Rayvon Bartelt, Jr. delivered a perfect strike.

The Tosa West defense continues to improve. They allowed 60 yards running in 28 attempts, and a total of 50 yards passing on 6 completions. The defensive front four – Devin Tucker, Christian Cagle, Christian Morzinski and Elliot Rogahn – controlled the line and was consistently in Cudahy’s backfield.

Trojan defenders were making tackles for loss and disrupting Packer ball carriers.  Zach Veit, Roberthenry Davis, Christian Morzinski and Jeffrey Little recovered Cudahy fumbles.

Tosa West linebackers continued to get better as a unit. Niko Lewis, Joe Harrington, Greg Lewis and Tim Meuller were flying to the ball and rarely allowed the Packers to gain yards after contact.

As mentioned in last week’s blog – the Woodland Conference’s two-week, end-of-season crossover thing was to guard against lopsided games. It didn’t work.  In week one the West Division of the Woodland conference won 5-of-6 games, several with a “running clock” (meaning that one side was up by at least 35 points). Week two crossovers saw Woodland’ West Division go 6-0 against the East, with more running clocks. When you lumped all week-two scores together – Woodland West outscored the East 262-40!

Playoff-Bound:  The Trojans are in the Division Two playoffs for the second consecutive season. They are in Group “C”, one of four, eight-team brackets in this division (divisions are determined by a school's enrollment). They made it by virtue of their winning overall record and strength of conference (for all criteria, go to wissports.net).

On Friday night our Trojans travel to take on the Kimberly Papermakers, a “two-seed” in their bracket with a record of 9 – 0. Tosa West is a seven-seed, with a record of 5 – 4 overall.

Reports have it that the Papermakers are unhappy because they’re not a #1 seed, and they’re in the same bracket as Homestead, another undefeated team and the bracket’s one-seed.

The Trojans could complain too, because their first-round game requires them to travel two hours north – and take on a perennial, state-wide powerhouse. All other Woodland West playoff teams – there are five – stay local for their first-round games.

But for high school football fans, the playoffs are an exciting time! Here’s wishing our Trojans the best of luck and great success!  And safe travels to all Trojan fans making the trip north this Friday.
