Tosa West Football Banquet – 2013 Season Celebration

The 2013 Tosa West football team finished with a solid 5-4 regular season record and – as this blog chronicled – lost to Kimberly in the state playoffs.

One short year ago, this season’s seniors and juniors were part of an outstanding 2012 breakout season (regular season record of 7-1, playoff spot). So this second consecutive solid year is an important step toward developing the program’s foundation and rewarding the players for their work.

In recognition of the team's work, there were plenty of awards handed out at the 2013 Tosa West Football Banquet held Nov 25.

Ten Trojans were recognized by conference coaches as All Conference award winners.

Six Trojans were recognized on offense.  First team All Conference players were: Senior wide receiver Develyn Ferguson, junior running back Demaris Purifoy, and junior offensive guard Christian Morzinski.  Receiving Honorable Mention were senior center Elliot Rogahn, senior running back Jameson Brock, and senior quarterback Jared Morzinski.  Jared Morzinski also won All Conference Academic honors.

Four Trojans were recognized on defense. First team All Conference players were senior linebacker Greg Lewis and junior safety Zach Veit.  Receiving Honorable Mention were junior tackle Christian Cagle and senior cornerback Robert Henry Davis.

Players named “Team MVP” were Demaris Purifoy on offense, and Greg Lewis and Zach Veit on defense. Other special, individual team awardees were: Robert Henry Davis (Special Teams Player of the Year), Christian Cagle (Defensive Line Player of the Year), junior Ben Makhlouf (Scout Defense Player of the Year), Greg Lewis (Offense Iron Man) and junior linebacker Joe Harrington (Defense Iron Man).

Offensive line player of the year awards went to Elliot Rogahn and Christian Morzinski. The Scout team offensive players of the year were sophomore Malik Bascom and junior Kyle Hemming.

Most improved players were sophomore Truman Tyson and junior Isaiah Randolph

Three team managers were thanked for their dedication and leadership: seniors Janessa Foster, Dannica Jefferson and Amani Pettiford.

A consistent message was delivered by Head Coach Matt Good, Athletic Director Jeff Gabrielson and several other coaches: build on success with player and team development during the off-season. Training and weight lifting are required to keep momentum and continue to grow into a top-tiered state football team like Kimberly – winners of the state title in Division 2.

Coach Good said that - with enough development - the goal is to have a team where no player goes “both ways”. This year it was common for players to start on both offense and defense, making injury more likely and limiting effectiveness.

The banquet ended with seniors stepping to the podium to thank their coaches, families, friends and teammates for their support and the successes they have had individually and as a team. These seniors are:  Jameson Brock, Eric Chapman, Robert Henry Davis, Develyn Ferguson, Greg Lewis, Carlos Morris, Jared Morzinski, Tim Mueller and Elliot Rogahn.

Any other comments or congrats to the 2013 team, feel free to add them below. Go Trojans!
