No ‘Battle of the Tosas’ Tailgate in 2013

The city rivals once again play football to open the season, on Friday Aug. 23.

The hoopla surrounding the latest revival of the Tosa East-Tosa West football series will be less than last time, owing to the day the game will be played.

When the city rivals played back in 2011, it was the first time in 15 years they’d met in football. The game was played on a Saturday at Hart Park, and was preceded by a citywide tailgate party.

West did not meet East in 2012, as the regular season football schedule was reduced to eight games and conference commitments came first. It’s back to nine games in 2013, and East visits West for the season opener at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23.

Because the game is on a Friday instead of a Saturday, with many parents working and then commuting until well after 5 p.m., there wasn’t enough time to stage any grand festivities, said Dave Goodwillie, incoming president of the Tosa West Booster Club.

“Knowing we had only an hour to do anything, we decided to leave it as a normal game,” he said.

That shouldn’t dampen the spirit once the game kicks off, however, East won that 2011 game by a 21-13 score, marking the Red Raiders first varsity football win since 2008.
