Wauwatosa Beautification Committee Needs You!

Become a Gardening Angel & help beautify Wauwatosa. Volunteer mtg 4/28 @ Tosa Fire Station at 1601 Underwood Ave.

Have you ever admired the flowers in the medians on our main streets, or stopped to think how nice it is to have flowers in the planters along North Avenue? Believe it or not, many of those flowers are planted by volunteers. In 2005 the city of Wauwatosa cut the funding for many of these public gardens, so the Wauwatosa Beautification Committee (WBC) stepped in. They sent out a plea for "Gardening Angels" and I was intrigued, so I attended a meeting at the library, signed up to help, and have been planting the bed in the median by my office on 117th & North ever since (see photos for last year's "before" and "after").

Now the Beautification Committee is looking for more volunteers. Gardening Angels currently plant annuals at 127 public gardens.  Many of these gardens are located in neighborhoods, but WBC also maintains gardens at the Library/City Hall, Police Station, Millennium Garden, on North Avenue and Burleigh Street boulevards and at all of the Welcome To Wauwatosa signs.

I can assure you as a Realtor that all of these gardens do add value to our community and therefore, indirectly contribute to your home's value. When transferees come to the area and are touring different communities, seeing beautiful plantings throughout our city only make Wauwatosa more inviting.

Traditionally the Gardening Angels plant the annuals during the first weekend of June (WBC supplies them) and then we periodically check the gardens for weeds during the summer. No gardening experience is needed! The wonderful gardeners on the WBC supply the expertise.

Take it from me, this is a wonderful way to help beautify our community, get a little exercise and meet some really nice people. For more information on the WBC please visit the website: http://www.wbc-wi.org

And if you would like to be a Gardening Angel, please join us for a volunteer meeting on Sunday April 28th from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Wauwatosa Fire Station located at 1601 Underwood Ave. I hope to see you there!
