Aurora's Fourth Mayfair Corridor Site Opens Monday

Outpatient surgery center to bring 100 jobs to city.

Aurora Health Care will open a new 60,000-square-foot ambulatory surgical center at 2999 N. Mayfair Rd. Monday, a project nearly four years in the making.

The three-story center, owned by Mayfair Medical Associates, LLC, is an $18 million project developed by VJS Development Group, LLC, of Pewaukee. Aurora's investment in the project includes $12 million for construction and $7.5 million in equipment, said Mary Reinke, Aurora's vice president of stakeholder services. Aurora will be the sole tenant and lease the center from Mayfair Medical.

Once the facility is fully operational, it will employ nearly 100 caregivers, including physicians, physician assistants, nurses, radiology and physical rehabilitation staff, among others, Reinke said. The employees will be a blend of current Aurora employees relocating to the 2999 N. Mayfair Rd. facility and new employees, she said.

Construction first began in late 2007, but was delayed a few months later after Aurora purchased the practice of the radiology group behind the project. The delay lasted nearly a year, while Aurora put together its specifications for the building, said Jim Sedgwick, vice president with VJS Development.

The building – which is not tax-exempt and so is on the tax rolls – departs from Aurora’s typical branded look of red brick and teal, presenting a new architectural statement on Mayfair Road, according to Sedgwick.

“We think it’s kind of one additional step in the ... regeneration of Mayfair Road,” Sedgwick said.

The outpatient surgery center services will ramp over time, but the pace of scheduling at the new center already shows the new facility is in a desired, convenient location for patients, according to Reinke. In addition to surface parking, the 2.45-acre site includes a parking structure, with direct access to the building from the first and second floor parking decks.

"Patients really welcome quality care accessible in their community," Reinke said. The new center "brings to the Wauwatosa community services they have not had before."

The center will strengthen Aurora's presence in the Mayfair corridor, Reinke said, and is its fourth location in the area and fifth in the city. In the Mayfair corridor, Aurora currently operates an urgent care health center at 10400 W. North Ave., and advanced care clinics at 3289 N. Mayfair Rd. and at 4025 N. 92nd St.. The health care system's psychiatric hospital is in the city at 1220 Dewey Ave.

The outpatient surgery center consolidates some services and  offers new services, Reinke said. The facility is primarily an ambulatory surgery center, she said, and includes four categories of services: orthopaedics and orthopaedic outpatient surgery, gastrointenstinal services, physical therapy and rehabilitation, and imaging and diagnostics.
