WEDNESDAY UPDATE: Frost Warning Remains in Effect for Tonight

Covering flowering plants could help reduce damage if temperatures drop as predicted.

There could be a damaging freeze Wednesday night, with temperatures dipping below 28 degrees, the National Weather Service in Sullivan said in a severe weather alert.

Cold and very dry air ushered into Wisconsin on high winds Monday is expected to remain anchored over the southern part of the state through Thursday.

That creates conditions for freezing temperatures overnight and possible hard freezes because of the dry air and clear skies over most of Southeast Wisconsin, the service said.

It is possible, forecasters said, that things will be a little warmer near Lake Michigan.

The Weather Service warned that cold-sensitive vegetation could be harmed, after record-breaking March temperatures advanced some flowering plants four to six weeks ahead of typical spring blooming.

Not much can be done to protect flowering trees at this point, but covering smaller shrubs and emerging perennial plants could keep them from harm.
