Comedy for a Cause

During a winter when the words “polar vortex” entered our vocabulary, we’re looking for a few good laughs anywhere we can find them. Come inside where it's warm at Serb Hall in Milwaukee for the 13th annual “Comedy for a Cause.” The comedians at ComedySportz put on a family show to raise money for the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance (WOCA).

The doors will open at 5 p.m. featuring a buffet, raffle drawings, and silent auction. The laughs begin on stage at 7 p.m. followed by a live auction at 7:30 p.m. Also new this year, for every non-perishable food item visitors bring to donate to the Hunger Task Force, they will receive an extra raffle ticket for a drawing of prizes.

The idea for the event came from a victim of ovarian cancer who created our WOCA chapter more than a decade ago. Joan Sagan was only 49 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1999 and later died in 2004. An oncology nurse, Sagan knew more about the disease than most patients, and also knew the importance of a good laugh.

“Joanie had such a great sense of humor,” said Sandi Wagner, her sister and Executive Director of WOCA.

Joan’s two sisters are both executive leaders of WOCA and carrying on the tradition of “Comedy for a Cause” which is the group’s second largest fundraiser of the year. Guests this year can bid on prizes that include an autographed and framed jersey of Green Bay Packers legend Paul Hornung, a football signed by current members of the Packers, and a Harley Davidson women’s leather jacket.

Guests can also bid on a one night stay to the Pfister or Iron Horse Hotels, and a suite at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. All of the proceeds go to WOCA to help raise awareness, educate, and support women in Wisconsin with ovarian cancer.
