Hal's Harley-Davidson 12th Annual Toast To Hope

Bop ‘til you drop 50’s style at Hal's Harley-Davidson's 12th Annual Toast To Hope event on Saturday, April 5th from 6pm to 9pm

The Toast to Hope is Hal's biggest fundraiser of the year, with all proceeds going to the ALSA-WI Chapter. Since 2003, we have raised more than $170,000 and hope to make this year our biggest year yet!

Just what is ALS? Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease, first described in 1869 by the noted French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. Although the cause of ALS is not completely understood, the last decade has brought a wealth of new scientific understanding about the disease that provides hope for the future.

ALS is not contagious. It has no cure and its cause is unknown. The word, amyo-trophic is derived from the Greek and means “muscle wasting.” Lat-eral refers to the parts in a person’s spinal cord where nerve cells are located. As the nerve cells die, scler-o-sis or scarring occurs. In essence, ALS attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, affecting the ability to control muscle movement. There are different varieties of ALS and the disease may affect individuals in different ways. In most cases, however, the first symptom is muscle weakness. Ultimately, ALS affects the muscles needed for such vital functions as breathing and swallowing, leaving an individual with ALS with an intact mind imprisoned inside an unresponsive body.

More significant advances of research into ALS have occurred in the last decade than all of the time since the disease was identified in 1869. Advances in technology and the genetic revolution are aiding researchers in unlocking the ALS mystery. As more scientists focus on this perplexing disease, the outlook for new understanding brightens each day. Here at Hal’s Harley-Davidson, we hope to assist in the fight against ALS and help in any way we can.
