An 'Awesome' Sunny Day for Avery's Lemonade Stand

Sunshine breaks out from just before until just after Tosa girl's 'awesome' effort to help kids beat cancer.

The sun broke out after 1 p.m. Saturday and then hid again a little after 4. Perfect timing for Avery's Lemonade Stand.

Avery Aldrich sold more than 150 cups of lemonade in two hours when an overcast day turned bright and warm for her. The 5-year-old girl was raising money for research to overcome childhood cancer, in memory of her brother Jakob, who died of the disease.

With a lot of help from friends and neighbors – including those who remember her brother best – Avery easily topped her goal of raising $500 for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

"Jakob would have been in fifth grade at Roosevelt this year," said Avery's mother, Jennifer Aldrich. "A mom from the fifth-grade class organized the kids to come down – 60 of them."

Avery's dad had to go out for more lemonade, and East Tosa turned out to put Avery well over her goal.

Jakob died in 2009, when Avery was very small, but she remembers and misses her brother and wants other families to not have to suffer the loss of a child like she lost him.
