Visit Avery's Lemonade Stand Saturday to Fight Childhood Cancer

Tosa girl is helping 'one cup at a time' to fight disease that took her brother's life, in the hope that others might live.

The weather should be a little warmer Saturday, so consider warming your heart and that of a little Wauwatosa girl by biking, running, hiking or driving to Avery's Lemonade Stand in East Tosa for an afternoon pick-me-up.

Avery will be set up from 2 to 4 p.m. in front of the Aldrich home at 2322 N. 73rd St., raising money to fight childhood cancer.

Avery lost her older brother Jakob to the disease, and with the help of her mother, Jennifer Aldrich, she is joining the effort to help keep other families from loss by "Fighting childhood cancer one cup at a time."

That's the slogan of the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, which grew from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004).

In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.

Here, on Saturday, Avery's goal is to collect at least $500, and she's already received $210 in online donations. If you can't stop by to have Avery pour you  a refreshing cup, you can visit the virtual Avery's Lemonade Stand online to make your donation. All proceeds will benefit the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

On her foundation web page, Avery wrote: "I am going to sell lemonade to raise money for kids with cancer. My brother died from cancer and I miss him. I want to help other kids who have cancer too."
