India Fest Milwaukee Comes to Humboldt Park

Vibrant costumes, Bollywood music and dance, classical Hindustani and Karnatik music, and authentic Indian cuisine come together to celebrate Indian culture on a grand scale at the free India Fest Milwaukee 2013, Saturday, Aug. 24, in Humboldt Park, 3000 S. Howell Ave.

“There is no better way to learn about Indian culture,”
said Purnima Nath, president of Spindle India, a non-profit, non-religious organization and the event’s organizer and producer. “We are weaving happiness as we bring people together through collaboration. Our goal is to weave India’s colorful cultural threads into the rich multicultural tapestry of American culture.”

Diversity of Indian Culture
Music and dance performances, a fashion show and display of Indian costumes, and renowned Indian foods will showcase the diversity of culture in the Indian states.

Muisic
Classical drums or tabla, jugalbandi or entwined duets, and contemporary keyboard, drums, and guitar of the Bollywood style will be featured.

Dance
Traditional forms of Indian classical dances, such as Kathak with traces of temple dances, as well as the energetic Bollywood dance moves will be performed in colorful costumes.

Fashion / Costumes
At 2 p.m., a fashion show will display the vivid colors of India’s clothing.

Food
Foods available at the festival range from dosas, similar to crepes or pancakes, to chaats, savory snacks often sold from food carts in India, to biriyanis, rice-based dishes with vegetables or chicken.
