Admitting He's 'Messed Up,' Driver Gets 2nd OWI After Driving in Circles

Officer sees driver orbiting construction barricade on Blue Mound Road and finds he's wanted for continuing to drive after his first OWI conviction.

A Wauwatosa police lieutenant came across a curious sight while supervising the late patrol shift on July 11 – a man driving in circles around a construction barricade in the middle of Blue Mound Road.

It was 1:30 a.m., and the driver circled, circled,Β stopped, then circled again in the 10700 block, just east of Mayfair Road, each time entering the oncoming lanes of traffic.

When the lieutenant pulled the driver over and got out of his squad car, he saw that there was a second man in the middle of the intersection, walking in circles and howling obscenities into his cell phone. He came over to the stopped car and began to argue with the lieutenant.

When several more officers arrived, the man on foot calmed down and the driver, wanted on two warrants for driving after revocation, was handcuffed. He smelled highly of alcohol, the arresting officer said.

The other man said the driver was picking him up from work at Mo's Irish Pub, and the driver said he was doing the driving even though he was "messed up" because he was less messed up than his friend.

Taken to the station on the warrants, the driver was asked to perform sobriety tests and he agreed to try, but in the event he was unable to complete any of them.

Police records checks showed the suspect's driving under revocation warrants both stemmed from his first drunken driving conviction in 2008.

He agreed to give both a voluntary blood sample and a breath test, and blew a .18 blood alcohol content.
