Cash Taken in Burglary at Simma's Bakery

Break-in discovered Monday morning, but business had been on holiday for a week.

A burglary at the well-known may have occurred as recently as last night, although it might have gone undiscovered earlier while the business was closed on its annual week-long July vacation.

At 3:55 a.m. Monday, police were called to Simma's, 817 N. 68th St., to investigate a break-in. A baker who had arrived to work at 3 a.m. noticed after about 45 minutes that the restroom window had been damaged and the office was disturbed, with drawers opened and a $5 bill on the floor.

The restroom window is at the end of a narrow alley off Wells Street. Police found that the screen had been cut, the sash raised, and a board at the base of the window had been pushed in.

The burglar or burglars went to the retail area and office at the front of the business, and rifled a desk and a locked file cabinet, the latter by prying it open with a tool far enough to reach inside.

The owner told police by phone that a small amount of cash had been kept in the file cabinet. But the owner did not know how much may have been taken.

Simma’s had been closed for a week, so although some employees came and went during the time, and some maintenance work was done, it is not known precisely when the burglary occurred.

Simma’s has no alarm or security camera systems.
