Child Abuse Suspect Back in Jail After Visiting Baby

A 20-year-old Wauwatosa woman accused of repeatedly hitting her 3-month-old daughter during an is back in jail after she allegedly went to see the baby against court orders and in violation of bail.

Chancline C. Babcock was charged Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with one count of felony bail jumping. If convicted, she faces up to six years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

Babcock, then 19, was arrested July 26 and charged days later with four counts of felony child abuse for delivering four hard slaps to her infant daughter after the child's father had stepped out for a few minutes.

He left a video camera running so as not to miss what he thought might be the little girl's first word, but instead he was horrified to see his child's mother smacking her hard across her face and neck.

Babcock was to have no contact with her daughter until her case is resolved.

According to the new criminal complaint:

On Aug. 19, the baby’s father was with the child at his cousin’s home in the 3400 block of North Fourth Street in Milwaukee and then went to his aunt’s home for a short time, leaving the baby with family.

Babcock called him, he said, and told him she was going to his cousin’s to see the baby. He rushed back to the home.

He said he told Babcock she couldn’t see the child, but she began to cry, so he let her see the baby for five minutes. The couple then went downstairs and talked for two hours. But afterward, the father felt guilty. He told his aunt about it, who called .

On Aug. 30, a Wauwatosa police officer called Babcock and asked if she had gone to see the child, and she admitted she had.

After that, the aunt again called police, telling them that Babcock had called her five times in the morning, upset with her for telling the cops about the visit.

Babcock was in custody again at the time of this report on a $500 signature bond and has been ordered to the JUSTICE 2000 program for supervision while awaiting trial.
