Intern Charged With Stealing Narcotics From Tosa Pharmacy

Woman, 22, came under suspicion when prescription drugs began disappearing not long after she started her internship.

A 22-year-old Milwaukee woman is facing felony charges after she was allegedly caught stealing medications while interning at a Wauwatosa pharmacy.

Margaret A. Sanders was charged Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, one count of possession of narcotic drugs and one count of theft. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and $30,000 in fines.

On June 7, Wauwatosa police officers were called to , 6950 W. State St., after an employee theft was discovered by the pharmacy manager who noticed some Hydrocodone had recently gone missing.

The manager conducted an internal investigation and discovered between April 26 and May 29, $257 worth of Alprazolam, Diazepam and Hydrocodone had gone missing from the pharmacy.

He had a hunch Sanders, who began working at the pharmacy on March 12 for an internship, might have been involved. He reviewed security tapes, which showed Sanders taking items and placing them in her purse on April 26, May 13, 15 and 22.

On May 25, security video showed Sanders take two Hydocodone bottles off a shelf and go to her purse where she put something inside, then return one bottle to the shelf, and on May 29, she took another bottle of Hydrocodone and hid it in her sleeve, the placed it in her purse before leaving the store.

The day she was arrested for the thefts, officers searched Sanders’ purse and discovered six Alprazolam pills, 29 Diazepam pills and one Oxycodone pill inside.

Sanders admitted to stealing the pills along with Promethazine syrup. She said she took the items because he mother recently had arm surgery and couldn’t afford the medication.

She then said she only gave half of the pills to her mother and kept the rest for her own personal use.

She will make her initial appearance in court Tuesday.
