A 29-year-old Milwaukee woman is facing felony charges after she allegedly used a Wauwatosa woman’s debit card to steal nearly $36,000 from her account in cash withdrawals and purchases.
Shaneka Lashae Campbell was charged Wednesday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with three counts of unlawful use of personal identification or documents. If convicted, she faces up to 18 years in prison and $30,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint:
The man who holds the victim’s power of attorney contacted the on Feb. 21 after he was informed by M&I Bank that the address on the woman’s account had been changed.
After informing the bank that the new address was incorrect, he discovered 151 unauthorized transactions on the account for a total loss of $35,896.
The first charge was to pay a bill at Cricket Communications, and investigators were able to identify Campbell from video surveillance footage taken at the store, as well as from separate $500 ATM withdrawls from the account on Jan. 27, Feb. 8 and Feb. 12.
Campbell was interviewed by police and admitted to using the card to commit the thefts. She will make her initial appearance in court Tuesday.
The complaint did not say how Campbell got hold of the victim's debit card.
