More Drivers Arrested for Repeat OWI Offenses

Second and third times are no charm on Tosa streets as men drive drunk again.

Two more drivers with previous convictions for drunken driving were reeled in for subsequent offenses recently in Wauwatosa.

At 2:44 a.m. Aug. 14, a 26-year-old Waukesha man was arrested for his third drunken driving offense after a West Bend man called police to report a driver making erratic lane changes and weaving as he exited Interstate 94 on to Highway 45.

The West Bend man continued to follow the suspected drunken driver until he lost sight of him in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2500 block of North 124th Street. Patrol officers arrived moments later and located the car and driver still in the parking lot.

The driver declined to perform a field sobriety test, saying he was too drunk, and said officers should just arrest him, which they did. The driver did give a breath test and registered a 0.17 blood alcohol level.

At 10:56 p.m. the night before, Aug. 13, a 49-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for his second drunken driving offense after a traffic stop in the 6200 block of West State Street.

The arresting officer was was posted in the 6300 block looking for intoxicated drivers when a minivan zoomed past him traveling at 45 mph in the posted 30-mph zone.

He stopped the driver for speeding, but noticed his eyes were bloodshot and glassy and that he smelled of alcohol.

The man agreed to perform a field sobriety test but performed poorly, then claiming he had a “disability dysfunctional.” Asked to recite the alphabet, he claimed he did not know it. A preliminary breath test registered a 0.147 BAC.

He had been arrested for his first OWI offense in February in Illinois.
