Opening Day Drunk Driving Arrests Include One Very Wrong Turn Onto Rails

were out in force Friday to monitor sobriety on the Brewers' Opening Day, and their night ended with a situation that might have seemed amusing if it weren't so dangerous.
At 10:36 p.m., a 26-year-old Oconomowoc man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after he drove onto the railroad tracks east of Harwood Avenue in the Village and got stuck.
A caller from told police he had been sitting in the lower level of the restaurant when he saw the driver turn up the tracks and drive about 50 feet before stalling.

He said he was watching the man reeling drunkenly and yelling about his plight while he tried to push his car off the tracks.
Police had to alert the Canadian Pacific to shut down the line until the car could be towed off the rails.

While talking to the driver, an officer noticed he smelled of alcohol and had glassy, bloodshot eyes, and the man admitted he had been drinking. He performed poorly on a sobriety test and registered a .18 blood alcohol content on a breath test.
Near miss makes for an easy mark for officer
At 7:32 p.m., a 43-year-old West Allis man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after he nearly sideswiped a police car parked in the 6200 block of Blue Mound Road.
The officer, who was monitoring traffic near Miller Park on Opening Day, stopped the driver and asked him to perform a field sobriety test, which he failed. He refused to take a breath test and was taken to for a mandatory blood draw.
Another driver narrowly avoids an accident
At 7:20 p.m., a 23-year-old Howards Grove man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after he was stopped for driving recklessly and erratically in the 7000 block of Blue Mound Road, nearly colliding with another car, after leaving the ball game. He had difficulty completing the field sobriety test and blew a .15 BAC.
Underage driver causes a collision
At 7 p.m., a 20-year-old Waukesha man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after he caused an accident at the intersection of North 68th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue after attending the Brewers’ opening game.
He could not follow most of the directions in a sobriety test and blew a .23 BAC. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
