Police Report: A Roundup of Recent Criminal Activity

Alert Wauwatosa officers apprehend a lot of fugitives and drunk drivers during the week.

Close readers of police blotters might notice a couple of things about this week's offering: Tosa police officers kept a good eye on the streets, catching up with a lot of fugitives from justice and people who drove drunk; and that among available police reports from Monday through Thursday, there was not a single report of shoplifting at Mayfair Mall.

Thursday

At 11:31 p.m., a 15-year-old boy was reported missing from Carmelite School for Boys, 1214 Kavanaugh St. Staff had given him a ride to school in the morning and a bus pass to return that afternoon, but he did not come back. The boy’s guardian, his grandmother, said she had seen or heard from him. The same boy had done the same thing two days before.

At 1:30 p.m., a Wauwatosa woman reported that her company-owned tablet computer stolen had been stolen from her workplace, Vitas Hospice, 2675 N. Mayfair Rd., sometime within the previous half-hour. There were no witnesses or suspects. The computer was not working, and the woman had boxed it for shipping back to the manufacturer and left it on the reception desk. The box disappeared while the receptionist went on break. The computer was valued at between $500 and $1,000.

At 9:29, two 20-year-old Milwaukee men were arrested on outstanding warrants after a patrol officer saw them make an illegal left turn. One man was wanted in West Allis for loitering in the presence of alcohol, the other in Butler for operating a vehicle after suspension of his license. The two posted bond and were released.

At 7:06 p.m., a 21-year-old Milwaukee woman was arrested at the Applebee’s restaurant at Mayfair Mall on two outstanding warrants from the Greendale Police Department for retail theft and trespassing. Police had been called because a group of four people were refusing to pay their bill. Officers ran checks on all four and discovered the warrants on the woman. The others in the group paid their bill and were allowed to go without charges. The woman who was arrested was held until the Greendale police picked her up.

At 6:08 p.m., a 20-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested in a parking lot in the 10700 block of West Capitol Drive on a Greenfield warrant for operating after suspension when a Wauwatosa patrol officer noticed his vehicle registration was expired. The man signed a bond faxed from the Greenfield Police Department and was released.

At 2:44 p.m., a Mequon man who was the owner of a cargo van that had been parked for a week in a parking lot in the 6600 block of West State Street was contacted after a Wauwatosa Police Department parking officer noticed a pile of wet mail on the ground next to the van. Officers found that the door lock had been punched in and the vehicle rifled. When the owner arrived, he reported a few items missing but could put a value only upon $50 worth of loose change in a jar that was missing.

At 2:14 p.m., a resident reported that on Monday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. someone used his debit card to place $105.98 worth of minutes on prepaid cell phone. His card had not been stolen and he did not know how anyone would have gotten the number.

At 7:30 p.m., a resident in the 1800 block of Ludington Avenue reported that sometime since 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, someone had stolen a U.S. flag on a staff from the bracket on his front porch. The value of the flag was put at $45, although many might call it priceless.

At 10:26 a.m., a resident in the 11900 block of West North Avenue reported that someone had stolen his roadside mailbox sometime since 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The mailbox had been unscrewed from its post. It was not anything fancy. It was described as a gray plastic rural-style box worth $25.

Tuesday

At 9:14 p.m., a 15-year-old was reported missing from Carmelite School for Boys, 1214 Kavanaugh Pl. This was the same boy who would fail to return on time to the school Thursday.

At 8:36 p.m., a 48-year-old woman, no residence given, was arrested for drunken driving after she caused a traffic accident at the corner of Mayfair and Blue Mound roads. The woman had failed to stop in time at a traffic signal and rear-ended the car in front of her. Patrol officers investigating the accident smelled alcohol and noticed the woman was woozy and slurring her speech. She failed a field sobriety test and submitted to a blood test.

At 5:30 p.m., a 20-year-old West Allis man was arrested on an order to detain after he became combative at the Milwaukee County Mental Health Center.

At 4:43 p.m., a 47-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested on two outstanding warrants from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department for failure to pay child support and for a “family offense,” and on a Sturtevant warrant for traffic offenses. He had been stopped for speeding, so he was ticketed for that and for operating while suspended and for having no insurance. He was turned over to the Sheriff’’s Department.

At 3 p.m., a Milwaukee girl reported that at sometime since 11:40 a.m. that day someone had stolen her cell phone ($200) and digital camera ($50) and $10 cash from her backpack at Wauwatosa East High School. She said the backpack had been unattended only while in the girls’ locker room during her sixth-hour physical education class.

At 10:48 a.m., a Milwaukee boy reported that sometime since 8 a.m. someone had stolen his iPod worth $250 from his backpack at Wauwatosa East High School. He had left the backpack unattended in his locker during the first hour of classes.

At 4:56 p.m., employees of Securience, an internet sales firm at 10437 Innovation Dr., reported that someone had opened an account and over the course of the previous week made more than 130 attempts to purchase items, mostly gift certificates, with numerous different credit cards registered to different people from around the United States and with internet protocol addresses from Virginia to Romania to Nigeria. The purchases were denied for lack of verification.

At 10:29 a.m., a Mayville man complained that his former girlfriend, a Wauwatosa woman, had taken $950 from his business checking account without his permission.

At 6:11 a.m., a 43-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested during a traffic stop in the 5700 block of West Vliet Street for possession of stolen property. The man had blown through a stop sign at 40 mph in a 30 mph zone. The license plate on the car was registered to a different vehicle and had apparently been stolen. The man also had no driver’s license.

At 5 p.m., three boys, two 15 and one 14, were reported missing and fugitives from Carmelite School for Boys, 1214 Kavanaugh Pl.

Monday

At 9:10 p.m., a 52-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for drunken driving after he was stopped for driving without his lights on in the 6600 block of West State Street. The man said he hadn’t been drinking, but the patrol officer smelled alcohol and the driver was unsteady. He failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath test.

At 8:07 p.m., a 19-year-old woman from Zion, IL, was arrested at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 10499 Innovation Drive, for possession of marijuana. Police had been called to the hotel after the manager had observed several women visiting a guest’s room one after the other during the day and heard several arguments about money and sex. The manager wanted the activity stopped and asked police to intervene and remove the man. He admitted he had been engaging in sex with several women he had contacted via the internet but was “just having a good time” before leaving the area for Arizona in a couple of days. He denied paying for sex. The woman in his room at the time was searched and found to have a small amount of marijuana.

At 6:50 p.m., a 29-year-old Milwaukee woman was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after a traffic stop in the 7100 block of Milwaukee Avenue for erratic driving. She failed a sobriety test and gave a breath test that registered a .118 blood alcohol content.

At 5:10 p.m., a 24-year-old Wauwatosa man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after a traffic stop in the 1800 block of Wauwatosa Avenue for erratic driving. The driver failed a field sobriety test and gave a breath test reading of .148.

At 5 p.m., a Wauwatosa resident complained that someone in Illinois was using license plates registered to him that should have been destroyed when he traded in his car. He told officers that an auto sales representative at the car dealership where he sold the car assured him the plates would be destroyed.

At 11:10 a.m., a 38-year-old Oconomowoc woman was arrested for obstruction and possession of drug paraphernalia at the Forty Winks Motel, 11017 W. Blue Mound Rd. Police were called on a complaint that a guest was staying in the motel under a false identity, leading them to suspect identity theft. Officers questioned the woman who had reserved the room and two friends who were staying there unbeknownst to the motel staff. The woman repeatedly gave officers false information and during a search was found to have two crack pipes.
