Police Report: Update on Crime in Wauwatosa

Several arrests for theft, trespassing involved people already banned from premises.

Thursday

A resident of the 600 block of North 78th Street reported that some time on Wednesday an heirloom diamond ring was stolen from atop her bedroom dresser and she suspected that a member of a contract cleaning crew had taken it. The woman had hired the cleaners after she burned a pot of popcorn on the stove on Tuesday. She had removed her jewelry while she was using cleaning solutions and placed it on the dresser Tuesday night, then noticed her grandmother’s engagement ring missing Thursday morning. She said that no one other than the cleaners had been in the home during that time. When the cleaning companies involved denied responsibility for the theft, she called police. The ring is valued at $3,500.

A resident of 2500 block of North 100th Street reported that some time Wednesday evening someone smashed the tailgate window of her minivan while it was parked in her driveway. The damage to the window and window wiper was $675.

At 5:02 p.m., a 51-year-old homeless man was arrested for trespassing at Harwood Place, 8220 Harwood Place, after he refused to leave the premises. He had left when police arrived, but based on his description police were able to locate him in the area of Harmonee and Underwood avenues. Staff at Harwood Place produced a memorandum banning the man from the facility, where his mother lives. The man has an extensive history of arrests for battery, bail jumping and disorderly conduct and had been arrested seven times for trespassing at Mayfair Mall, and elsewhere.

At 4:12 p.m., a 41-year-old West Allis man was arrested for retail theft at Home Depot, 4100 N. 124th St., after he left the store without paying for $153.47 worth of tools.

At 2:53 a.m., a 60-year-old Wauwatosa man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after he ran into a fire hydrant and two trees in the 900 block of Glenview Avenue. He told officers he had fallen asleep at the wheel. Suspecting he was intoxicated, police administered a field sobriety test, which the man performed poorly, and a breath test revealed that he was over the proscribed alcohol limit.

Wednesday

At 9:16 p.m., a 25-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for disorderly conduct after he urinated on a fence in the 2200 block of North 60th Street.

At 5:52 p.m., the manager of the BP gas station at 11417 Watertown Plank Road reported that a woman had left without paying for $42.53 worth of gas. The manager gave police a license number, but when they questioned the owners, an Elm Grove couple, they were able to produce a credit card receipt for the gas they bought. Police determined that the manager had recorded the license number of the wrong vehicle in the theft.

At 3:12 p.m., a 62-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for trespassing at Mayfair Mall when he was recognized there as having been banned from the property after an earlier arrest for theft.

At 1:30 p.m., the information technology manager at , 3077 N. Mayfair Rd., reported the theft of his laptop computer, worth $2,200, from his unlocked office.

At 8:55 p.m., a 33-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested on a Milwaukee County felony warrant for keeping a drug house after police arrived to break up a reported fight in the 6800 block of West North Avenue. The argument, which did not involve any physical violence, was over and one party had left.

Tuesday

At 10:02 p.m., a 23-year-old Wauwatosa man was arrested for disorderly conduct and was placed in 72-hour emergency detention for mental evaluation after he threatened members of his family with a knife at their home in the 3200 block of Knoll Terrace. The man was under the influence of drugs and family members said he had not only threatened them but had also threatened suicide.

At 7:31 p.m., a 17-year-old Muskego girl was arrested for retail theft at the store in Mayfair Mall after she removed the security sensor from a pair of jeans and tried to leave the store with them concealed in her purse.

At 2:47 p.m., a 58-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for retail theft at , 3201 N. Mayfair Rd., after he was recognized as a suspect in a theft earlier in the day. He was watched and seen to remove a bottle of perfume from its box, put the bottle in his pocket and try to leave the store. The man was found to have two bottles of cologne, a flashlight and a Mountain Dew. He was also found to have six prior arrests for retail theft.

At 4:35 p.m., a woman who lives in the 11600 block of Diane Drive called police to ask that her 17-year-old daughter be arrested for using the mother’s debit card without her consent. The woman had been missing her debit card but hadn’t cancelled, then found a bank statement hidden in her daughter’s room. She suspected that the girl was using a computer at to make transactions because she is blocked from the computer at home.

A resident of the 6400 Upper Parkway North reported that his car had been stolen from her driveway some time between 10:15 p.m. Monday and 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

At 1:15 p.m., a Wauwatosa West High School student reported that some time May 27 someone had stolen her iPod Touch from a classroom at the school. She said it had fallen out of her pocket and when she noticed and returned to get it, it was gone and was not turned in.

Monday

At 5:15 p.m., a 19-year-old Wauwatosa man was arrested for retail theft and trespassing at at Mayfair Mall after he was recognized as a suspect in earlier thefts and watched while he was in the store. He was seen concealing shirts in a duffle bag and a pair of undershorts in his pants and trying to leave without paying. He had been banned from the mall and the ban had not expired. He also had warrants out for trespassing and drug possession.
