Police were called Monday morning to Niemann's, 7475 Harwood Ave., after the owner arrived at 8:30 to find a cash register on the floor and the back door broken open.

The register had been turned on, apparently in the hope of the perpetrator to find a way inside, but there was no money inside anyway.

A second cash register used only during busy times was also empty and had been left with the drawer open.

Failing to find any cash there, the burglar or burglars invaded the office and opened drawers, but still found nothing woth taking.

Police officers investigating the break-in noticed that the door to an adjoining business, , 7471 Harwood Ave., was open and realized it had also been broken into. Cash was taken from the register at Tuesday’s Child.

At Niemann’s, a brick had been used to smash out a wooden slat, allowing the burglar to reach in and turn the bolt. At Tuesday's Child, a glass pane was removed for the same reason.

Simma's was burglarized in the same fashion over the weekend, but it was not certain at the time that it had happened overnight Monday because the staff had been on its annual one-week holiday after July 4.

Police now think it likely that the several burglaries were related and that all had happened late Sunday or early Monday.

The owner of Niemann's told police that in 40 years in the location, his business had only been burglarized once before, about 10 years earlier. Niemann's was founded in Milwaukee more than 100 years ago.
