Violent Crime in Wauwatosa and Wisconsin

Every year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation uses data reported to it by nearly every law enforcement agency in the country to build a report on crime in the United States. The report includes data on reported crimes, from theft to homicide, arrests, trends and how many officers are employed in communities. 

Patch has taken the Wisconsin data and put it into a searchable database. Fill in Wauwatosa or the name of another community to see the number of reported violent crimes in 2011, and click through to learn more about the types of offenses within each community.

As examples, Wauwatosa's violent crime rate 2011 was reported as 2.15 per 1,000 population, while our more suburban neighbor to the west, Brookfield, reported just 0.66 per 1,000. But West Allis, to our south, reported 3.28 violent crimes per 1,000.

Urban Milwaukee, with which both Wauwatosa and West Allis share long borders, reported a 9.99 per 1,000 violent crime rate, nearly five times Wauwatosa's.
