Wauwatosa Driver Gets 3rd OWI in 1½ Years

Man had overindulged at Summerfest and was driving without a license, since it was still revoked from his last drunken driving conviction.

At 12:41 a.m. last Thursday, a 23-year-old Wauwatosa man was arrested for his third drunken driving offense within 1½ years after he was pulled over in 11300 block of West North Avenue by a officer working an OWI Task Force deployment.

The officer saw the man driving erratically – jackrabbit-starting and squealing his tires, and once killing his engine – and followed him as he drove at high speed through the traffic cone-lined construction zone on North Mayfair Road.

The officer turned on his emergency lights but the driver didn’t slow down, and only pulled over after the officer followed him onto North Avenue.

The man said he and his girlfriend had been at Summerfest and that his driving issues were because he didn’t know how to drive a stick shift car.

But the officer smelled alcohol and said the man’s eyes were glassy. He performed poorly on a field test and was sent for a mandatory blood draw.

He was also driving without a license, since his had been revoked upon his second OWI conviction in June 2011.
