Authorities say 30-year-old led police on chase in stolen car before confronting trooper with knife.

Authorities have identified a 30-year-old Wauwatosa man as the person who was shot and killed in northern Iowa Wednesday by a State Patrol trooper.

John M. Pekrun was shot after authorities say he confronted the trooper with a knife following a chase in a stolen car, according to The Globe Gazette newspaper in Mason City, Iowa.

On Wednesday morning, Wisconsin authorities issued a warrant for Pekrun for a probation violation and suspicion of stealing a vehicle.

Around noon that day, Iowa State Patrol troopers spotted him and initiated a pursuit that led into Minnesota and then back into Iowa, according to the newspaper. The chase ended in Floyd, Iowa, when Pekrun lost control of the stolen vehicle he was driving.

Pekrun allegedly came out of the vehicle armed with a hunting knife, continued to refuse to drop the weapon and was shot, the newspaper said.
