City Offers One Last Chance to Pay Taxes in Person for 2011 Deduction

Payments can also be made by mail or in the City Hall depository box, but receipts will no longer be mailed at city expense.

Wauwatosa property owners have until Jan. 31 to make the first installment on their property taxes, but for anyone who wants to record the payment in 2011 for personal tax purposes, the city is giving you one last chance.

The will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday – New Year's Eve – for those who want to pay in person at City Hall, 7725 W. North Ave., and have a receipt handed to them showing a 2011 date.

Payments can also be made by mail but will be receipted for the date they are postmarked, not the date of your check, meaning you must mail your bill and payment in time for the U.S. Postal Service to process it.

As a last resort, you can put your bill and payment in the 24-hour depository box on the southwest end of City Hall near the employee entrance. Any payment left in the box before midnight Saturday will be receipted for that day.

If paying by mail or depository, the city will no longer mail you a receipt unless you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your payment. Receipts can also be picked up in person at the Treasurer's Office.

However, the city encourages everyone who has internet access to download their receipt on the new city Online Tax Bill and Receipt Search page. Allow some time for processing by the treasurer's staff.

The Treasurer also reminds everyone that they should not, must not, forget to endorse any escrow check used to pay all or part of a tax bill. Unendorsed escrow checks cannot be deposited by the city and will be returned.
