North Avenue, State Street Both Reopened Ahead of Schedule

Work on both streets completed and reopened to traffic a week before city engineer and contractors had projected.

As of Wednesday, both West North Avenue at 90th Street and West State Street at Harwood Avenue are open to two-way traffic – both well ahead of schedule.

North Avenue was closed Oct. 22 and was expected to remain closed until some time next week, the day unspecified. State Street closed Oct. 29 and was expected to be shut off for a full two weeks, or also until next week.

City Engineer Bill Wehrley announced the openings in an e-mail late Wednesday but did not mention how the work was completed so early, and could not be reached for comment.

North Avenue at 90th had been closed for work on the Meinecke Avenue Project while a massive trench was dug across the intersection for a 10-foot-diameter storm sewer pipe.

State Street in the Village was closed for only surface infrastructure – paving and curbs – and aesthetic enhancements. Pedestrian safety improvements including two "islands" in State Street and better-marked crossings were also installed.
