The Week Ahead: Coming Up in Wauwatosa

Wauwatosa Public Schools will be closed Monday in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

All city offices will be open, however, with the exception of Municipal Court, which will not be in session.

It's a big week in the schools once classes resume Tuesday, with high school final exams Tuesday through Thursday and the first semester ending Friday.

On Saturday, the Education Foundation of Wauwwatosa celebrates the successful conclusion of half the 2012-2013 year with its Black and White Catered Affair at 6 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 10499 Innovation Dr.

Innovation Park and the Eschweilers

In city business, the Common Council Committee of the Whole – all members of the council without the mayor presiding will convene at 7 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall.

The meeting will feature a presentation of the status and financial projections of Tax Incremental Finance District No. 6, which covers the UWM Innovation Campus property on the County Grounds.

The committee will also review and discuss the Springsted draft report on the feasibility of rehabilitation of the historic Eschweiler buildings as part of a residential apartment redevelopment.

The Springsted report was commissioned to independently analyze the conclusions of Mandel Group that it is not economically viable to rehabilitate the Eschweilers as apartments. The report supported that conclusion. Mandel has proposed razing three of the historic structures.

The Economic Development Advisory Committee meets at 8 a.m. Wednesday in Committee Room 1. No agenda has been published.

Court hearings on docket

There will be criminal court proceedings in two notorious cases this week.

The preliminary hearing and determination of probable cause on a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide against Daniel Plevak of East Troy is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Milwaukee County Criminal Justice Facility.

Plevak is accused of plotting to kill a Wauwatosa man who he had come to believe was a child sex offender. After a neighbor of the intended victim saw a truck circling the area, he called police, who found Plevak wearing a disguise and in possession of a loaded handgun.

The arraignment of Benjamin Sebena in , is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Criminal Justice Facility.

Sebena is expected to enter a plea on the charge of first-degree intentional homicide. Should he plead guilty or later be convicted at trial, Benjamin Sebena would face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment without possibility of parole – plus five years for the use of a firearm.

Jennifer Sebena was found shot to death outside Wauwatosa Fire Station No. 1 on Christmas Eve morning. She was the first officer to be killed in the line of duty in the nearly 100-year history of the Wauwatosa Police Department.
