Both High School Newspapers Win State Awards

Student journalists from each school place at the top in multiple categories, and East's Cardinal News wins second place statewide for general excellence.

Wauwatosa West and East high school student newspapers both won awards in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association’s High School Better Newspaper Contest.

“West Side Stories,” West High School’s student newspaper, received seven awards.

Kou Vang won first place in Photography, and Gabby Verette won first place in Feature Writing.

Jack Wongtam took two second-place awards in Graphics and General Reporting. Also winning second place awards were: Sam Clough, Sports Reporting; and Ryne Radske, Feature Writing. Caylin Rosene won third place in Photography.

“The Cardinal News,” East High School’s student newspaper, received two first-place awards and three second-place awards, including one in the General Excellence category.

Jack Lockhart took two first-place awards: Sports Reporting and Freedom of Information.

Receiving second-place awards were: Michelle Brown, Investigative Reporting; and Wes Zebrowski, Freedom of Information.

In addition, honorable mentions were awarded to Liam McMahon and Hannah DionKirschner.

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation (WNAF) is a not-for-profit arm of the state’s newspaper industry, providing scholarships and educational programs, enhancing training opportunities and connecting today’s newspaper managers with the next generation of leaders.

The “Better Newspaper Contest” recognizes student achievements in high school newspapering. The panel of judges is from Wisconsin’s newspapers and includes publishers, general managers, editors, reporters, photographers, copy editors and other staffers.
