More Teachers Leaving the District as Summer Ends

The district lost this month as many teachers over the last four years combined.

Citing lower salaries, a lack of respect for their position and the need for greater communication between educators and central office, 22 teachers resigned from the Wauwatosa School District this month.

That number is equal to the number of resignations for the last four years combined, the Wauwatosa NOW is reporting.

But, Superintendent Phil Ertl said 'Tosa is hardly unique.

"It's happening around the area. As people are leaving, they're going into positions that people have left, so it's kind of a waterfall effect," he is quoted as saying.

Human Resources Director Dan Chanen told school board members in July that teacher turnover is occurring at a normal rate, but he did say the loss of "10 full-time equivalents" at Wauwatosa East could represent as many as 20 individuals.
