Incumbent Phil Kroner Keeps Wauwatosa School Board Seat

Challenger and newcomer Carmela Rios falls by more than 1,000 votes in low-turnout election.

Incumbent School Board candidate Phil Kroner kept his seat by more than 1,000 votes in a citywide election featuring other statewide races that drew only a 27.49 percent turnout in Wauwatosa.

Kroner polled 4,186 votes against challenger Carmela Rios, who gained 2,963 votes for School Board Seat No. 1.

School Board seats are not districted but are elected citywide.

Rios' showing wasn't bad considering she'd never run for elective office before, but Kroner bested her by at least a slight margin in every one of the city's 24 voting wards.

In the end, it added up to a loss by 1,223 votes overall.

The low turnout was expected – Wauwatosa traditionally turns out to vote at nationally notable levels in national-level contests, but state and local races didn't have the draw of last summer's recall or the presidential vote in November.

In the race for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, incumbent Tony Evers outpolled challenger Don Pridemore 4,698 to 3,995 in Wauwatosa and retained his seat.

For justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Ed Fallone polled only 3,980 votes to incumbent Justice Pat Roggensack's 5,536 in Wauwatosa. Roggensack also was a winner.

In the only other contested race on the Wauwatosa ballot, Janet Claire Protasiewicz drew only 3,665 votes in Wauwatosa against the incumbent Rebecca Bradley, who garnered 5,404 in the race for Milwaukee County Circuit Court Branch 45.

In uncontested races, Ald. John Dubinski retained his seat on the Common Council representing District 2, and Michael Meier and Anne Fee kept their seats Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, on the School Board without opposition.
