Students Create Impromptu Memorial to Classmate

East students recorded in ephemeral art an outpouring of love for Sarah Pease, a classmate who died of cancer.

Sarah Pease died of leukemia July 3 just seven months after being diagnosed and starting treatment for the disease. The Wauwatosa East student's commitment to others led her to participate in numerous experimental treatments for the disease, even though her own condition proved to be incurable.

Sarah's integrity led her fellow students to launch the "Sarah Strong" movement that inspired sports teams, the band and the entire school community to wear that motto.

Sarah was memorialized Saturday at her funeral at the high school  Before the ceremony, a number of her friends turned out to leave their parting thoughts and impressions in chalk on the steps and sidewalks of the school.
