UPDATE: Experts Were On Hand to Render Aid in Accident

A 4-year-old girl who was in front of Eisenhower Elementary School couldn't have been much luckier unless there had been an ambulance standing by, a police report on the accident shows.

The accident occurred at 116th and Center streets. A police officer was within sight and sound, monitoring  school zone traffic at 119th and Center, when he heard a woman yelling, so he drove to investigate and arrived in seconds to find the child injured.

The officer immediately called for a medical unit and checked the girl for injuries. In moments, a school parent who is a physician joined him to assist with the girl until the medical unit arrived.

The report did not contain details of the girl's injuries, but on the day of the accident both school district and Fire Department officials said her injuries had been slight, that she had been conscious at the scene and that she appeared to be "doing fine."

Police estimated the speed of the car that hit the girl to have been only 10 to 15 mph. The report said that the child was crossing the street with her mother and that eastbound cars had stopped for them. The girl apparently thought that meant it was safe to cross all the way, and ran ahead of her mother into the westbound lane, where she was struck.

No citations were issued to the driver.

The girl is a junior kindergarten student who goes to and was at Eisenhower during a dropoff of an older sibling there.
