Milwaukee Magazine Editor Speaking at Mount Mary

Mount Mary College will present Bruce Murphy, writer and Milwaukee Magazine editor, as its “Writers on Writing” guest on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Stiekme Hall. The event is free and open to the public but reservations are encouraged. Find more information .

Concealed Carry in Local Businesses

With the new concealed carry law to go into effect Nov. 1, businesses must decide whether to post signage prohibiting concealed weapons in their establishments, and whether to allow employees to bring concealed weapons. Attorneys will talk about the law with business owners in this week open to the public:

  • Thursday, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 114 of the Chamber Building at 10437 Innovation Dr. There might be a food truck available for lunch. Speaker: Attorney Daniel J. Finerty.
  • Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at on 68th Street and North Avenue. Speaker: Attorney Christopher Johnson.

Halloween Weekend

The Halloween weekend will start early for Wauwatosa students, with no school on Friday for the Wauwatosa School District, K-12.

City-wide trick-or-treat is 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Some neighborhoods, like Pasadena and the Village, have their own times and routes that you can find with the local neighborhood associations.

Here some options for enjoying the holiday:

  • : On Saturday and Sunday, costumed kids will be awarded one free meal or Jack-o-lantern pancakes, and costumed adults will be offered a free Lowlands Brewing Company Bier.
  • Yo Mama: Through Oct. 30, you can win a month of free frozen yogurt at Yo Mama by crafting and posting a picture of the best Halloween-spirited froyo creation.
  • : Located in a 90-year-old deserted school about 40 minutes away in Oconomowoc, Haunted High advertises itself as Wisconsin's largest haunted attraction. It will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Milwaukee Zoo: For something closer and less scary, the Zoo offers Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday and Sunday, with a costume parade, haystack maze, a pumpkin patch light show and other activities.
  • : Enter a picture of your kid dressed up for Halloween before 9 p.m. Oct. 31 for a chance to win a trip to Los Angeles or New York to meet Heidi Klum. Klum will pick the most creative costume to win, and the top ten most creative costume-wearers will win $1,031 donations from Patch to give to a local charities of their choice.
