Tosa East Falls Short on Comeback Attempt

Red Raiders walk away with loss after mistake-prone game.

West Allis Central Bulldogs took a bite out of Wauwatosa East with continual turnovers, dropping the Red Raiders to 1-3 on the young season and 0-2 in conference play so far with a 28-21 victory.

The problem for the Red Raiders was obvious, with four of five turnovers from interceptions. Wauwatosa East Head Coach Jake Wolter was obviously not pleased with the turnovers.

"It's been the same story all year," said Wolter after the game. "We keep shooting ourselves in the foot with all of these turnovers."

It wasn't just turnovers that hurt the Red Raiders. On the first possession of the game, they had a bad snap on a punt attempt which led to West Allis Central getting good field position. Bulldogs quarterback Dakota Behrs took this great field position and found Brian Hoppe through the air to give West Allis Central the early 7-0 lead.

After a Wauwatosa East fumble, the Bulldogs took the ball on the 22 yard line and three plays later, running back Dushon Glover ran the ball in from 7 yards out to give West Allis Central a 13-0 lead.

For much of the first half, nothing went the way of the Red Raiders. But that changed with just under seven minutes to go in the second quarter, senior Vince Cupertino picked up a fumble on the 43 yard line and ran it back to the house which cut the Bulldogs lead to 13-7.

The scoring went quiet for a while until around the four minute mark in the third quarter when Bulldog junior quarterback Dakota Behrs found senior wide receiver Brian Hoppe through the air again, this time from nine yards out, to give the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead.

In the fourth quarter, East attempted to make a comeback. After a long drive, senior Michael Meade ran it in from one yard out to cut the lead to 21-14.

After stopping the Bulldogs on a fourth down attempt, East took the ball and began to march down the field. The momentum was swinging towards the Red Raiders until senior Brian Hoppe took an interception back 70 yards for the touchdown.

East added one more score when senior quarterback Kyle Vnuk found sophomore Shaquille Redding from 21 yards out to cut the lead to 28-21, but the Red Raiders were unable to find one more score.

Wauwatosa East's next game is at 7 p.m. Friday at Brookfield East.
