Tosa West Drops Home Opener to Cudahy, 23-7

One long touchdown run provides the only points for the Trojans.

Over the course of a football season every team is going to have one or two of those “tough” games. These are not necessarily games where they get blown out, but rather games where they just had a rough go of it. Wauwatosa West had one of those games Friday.

The Trojans dropped their home opener tonight to the Cudahy Packers 23-7. The loss puts the Trojans record at 1-2 and 0-1 in the Woodland Conference.

The Trojans just struggled overall, with blown assignments defensively and a lack of offensive rhythym. Wauwatosa West coach Matt Good was not pleased with his team's overall performance and said it's time to go back to square one.

“Go back to the drawing board, get back to work on Monday, watch film, and try to correct our mistakes” said Good after the game when asked where his team goes from here.

The Trojans' lack of offensive rhythm was easily noticeable right from the start of the game. Cudahy had the ball for most of the first quarter but came up with only three points. On their second possession of the game the Packers marched the ball inside the 5-yard line before turning it over on downs. After the Trojans committed the first of their three turnovers on the night, a fumble inside their own 10, the Packers had the ball deep in Trojan territory again. They were unable to punch it in for six, but they did make a field goal to take the early lead.

The second quarter is where things got rather interesting. With just over five minutes to go in the second quarter, Cudahy senior Jeff Hauenstein took off on a 46-yard touchdown run to give the Packers a 10-0 lead. The Trojans' next possession only lasted one play because junior wide receiver Shon Whitefield took off on an 86-yard touchdown run of his own. Not to be outdone, Cudahy freshman quarterback Angel Martinez found senior wide receiver Teontae Morgan for a 65-yard touchdown through the air. The entire sequence took just 34 seconds.

The Packers added one more touchdown in the second half when senior tailback Collin Eichner scored from one yard out to give the Packers a 23-7 lead.

The Trojans are on the road next Friday at Whitnall. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
