Tosa West Overpowered by New Berlin Eisenhower, 31-10

Trojans give up 270 rushing yards in Woodland Conference loss.

Power football. That’s what Tosa West saw from New Berlin Eisenhower at West’s home field Friday night, falling victim to the Lions 31-10. New Berlin improved to 3-2 overall and Tosa West fell to 1-4.

New Berlin’s pair of pounding running backs, with a combined weight of almost 450 pounds were joined by its contact-loving 215-pound quarterback on brutally effective runs through the core of Tosa’s defense. Compared to the visitor’s power, West’s quickness and stealth was a bad match.

The Trojan defense has been steady and stout all year, but this night was their biggest challenge. The players, coaches and fans all seemed to know the body shots were coming, but still couldn’t prevent the pain of their 270-yard plus ground attack.

The West offense came to life near midfield with under two minutes left in the first half. Sophomore quarterback Jared Morzinski found junior Mickey Morgan and sophomore Jameson Brock along the way, and each made great catches. Brock’s cross-field run-after-catch to the Lions 10 yard line brought the home crowd to its feet. Morgan’s field goal with two seconds left made the halftime score 14-3.

The second half was more of the same New Berlin ground control. A Trojan bright spot was an electrifying kickoff return by senior Reggie Cole that came after a New Berlin field goal, to close the score to 24-10.

On this cool, damp night, standout defensive plays were turned in by West juniors Jon Doolen, Andre Santiago and Sam Clough, along with seniors Brion Felix, Collin Joseph and Cole. The Trojan running game struggled most of the night, but Jared Morzinski had great protection from the Trojan offensive line and responded with his most productive passing night of the season, completing 15 of 28 for 143 yards. West was intercepted 3 times, and New Berlin lost one fumble.

The Trojans visit South Milwaukee at 7 p.m. Friday.
