1,500-Plus Cool at the Pool as Heat Stays Turned Up

On another perspiring day, a multitude takes to the waters, and Friday will be hardly less heated. The weather is forecast to break for the weekend, though.

The good news is, this heat spell is going to break.

The bad news is, not until we've sweltered through one more day of it.

As the afternoon temperature again hit 97 at mid-afternoon Thursday in Wauwatosa, 1,554 souls had turned the turnstiles at Tosa Pool at Hoyt Park by 3:15 p.m., and more were coming in.

The capacity of the pool is about 1,100, and at the height of the heat index it was probably close to full, although nobody was being turned away.

Morning parent-tot swims have been at capacity all week, said pool communications director Mary Pluta.

Check swim hours on the pool website, because Friday is expected to be just a measly 1-degree cooler.

But thunderstorms are expected late Friday, ushering in a front that should bring things back into the comfortable range of the lower- to mid-80s Saturday and maybe even to the upper 70s Sunday.

Don't take those figures to the bank. As always, forecasts for the Milwaukee area are predicated on averages recorded at Mitchell International – where it's always, as every Milwaukeean knows, cooler by the lake.
