Don’t Be Left in the Dark! - Deadline for Energy Assistance Applications Approaching

The deadline for residents to apply for energy assistance funds is approaching, and waiting until the last minute could leave many families without electricity and heat.

The deadline for residents to apply for energy assistance funds is approaching, and waiting until the last minute could leave many families without electricity and heat.

The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) is a one-time payment that covers a portion of the energy cost of a residence. The amount of the payment varies depending on several factors, including the household size, income and energy costs but the average payment is $338. WHEAP is available to all residents who meet income requirements; it is not restricted to residents receiving state or federal benefits.

With the We Energies disconnect moratorium coming in April, Milwaukee County wants to encourage anyone who needs help making payments to apply. Residents who wait until they are disconnected run the risk of seeing long lines and wait times. “We want to encourage those who qualify to submit applications now while help is available immediately,” said Department of Health & Human Services Director Héctor Colón.
