Two aldermen are elected from each of Wauwatosa's eight Common Council districts and serve four-year terms, with elections for those seats staggered two years apart. As members of the Common Council, aldermen consider and approve or deny all city policy matters. Aldermen serve on at least two standing council committees. They are:
- Budget and Finance
- Employee Relations
- Community Development
- Legislation, Licensing and Communications
- Traffic and Safety
Aldermen may also be asked to serve as members or liaisons to other city boards and commissions or community organizations.
The 5th District includes properties from West North Avenue north to the city limit and from the eastern city limit west to North 80th Street.
