Ah, Wauwatosa once had an IKEA in its grasp and turned its shoulder in favor of UWM. Maybe…Read More someday... somewhere...
Random Blog Commenter June 18, 2013 at 09:56 am
The UWM project will ultimately pay more property taxes and provide better jobs in a variety of…Read More fields both public and private. Big box stores pay a very low tax rate in Wauwatosa and have a lower diversity in employment opportunities. Put IKEA next to Wauwatosa.

It's unfortunate that yet another business is leaving Wauwatosa. I truly enjoy shopping and dining…Read More in the village! I hope our Wauwatosa business people will be able to come up with another business to occupy that space!

Thank God that the Applebee's at Mayfair Mall is closing! That is one of the worst restaurants I…Read More have ever been to in Milwaukee County! The management staff, the employees are the most ghetto people I've ever seen. The best thing that has ever happened at Mayfair Mall is now with Applebee's closing their doors. I wonder if Applebee's will put out a press release of where all of their Employees are being transferred to? I know for sure I will never ever go to another Applebee's in Milwaukee County Who have employees from the Mayfair location!

I think that is sad that Mayfair would not work with Applebee's to keep it at Mayfair. Mayfair loves…Read More to get rid of the stores and restaurants I like.

OK, now the real fun begins, trying to guess what will replace it. After some thought, my pick is…Read More Red Robin.
Any other guesses?

Sadly, but it seems Wauwatosa is slowly, gradually, but surely turning into Milwaukee. Granted,…Read More this is probably a former employee gone bad, but the Village cannot afford to have crime and other bad signs of neglect by city policing. A stronger police presence is needed. For instance,The other night, my wife & I walked to the Chancery (about a mile or so from our home in Tosa). We had dinner and as we left I nearly tripped over a half awake man who was on the sidewalk in a reclining position, partly on the sidewalk & partly against the Chancery building, w/plastic bags w/something in them strewn around him. We called police & they were to check it out but don't know result. We have also seen on a number of recent evening walks, the same heavily dressed women laying lengthwise in a reclined postion sleeping/or whatever on the bus stop bench located at the SE corner of 68th & State. Another bad sign for neighborhoods.

My name is Garry Kennedy, I have been in the private security industry for over 24 years so I would…Read More love to offer my services to anyone who needs security in Wauwatosa at a cost of $0.00 I relocated to Wauwatosa in August 2009 I moved to Wauwatosa because I love this city and I am willing to do anything I can to help protect others and others businesses!

Wauwatosa's crime rate has been steadily decreasing over the past ten years. What you are seeing are…Read More homeless people, who are apparently increasing. I know of the 'heavily dressed woman' you speak of, and she is definitely homeless. It has nothing to do with Wauwatosa's neighborhoods but plenty to do with the economy and our lack of compassion and helpfulness to those less fortunate.

By observing some of the crowds at most of our local restaurants, I am surprised we need ANY grocery…Read More stores.

I have lived in North Wauwatosa for the past three years. Prior to that I was within walking…Read More distance to the Whole Foods on the East Side, which I loved and miss. I have been hoping that they would consider bringing a store to the Brookfield/Wauwatosa area because with the movement of healthier, clean, organic eating this would be a well-known option to residents in this area. I know I would frequent it often over a Meijer and it's much closer than Outpost or Trader Joe's for me and my husband.

I would disagree. This proposal has been treated as a back room deal from the outset starting with,…Read More well, back room deals leading to a specially scheduled meeting of the HPC a year ago at which the public was informed that their opinions didn't really matter because this project was moving forward and the council would simply over rule the HPC if they didn't vote as desired. The public was told that promises to the public, adopted plans and land use regulations were not relevant to the conversation. Does that seem fair and open-minded to you?

Yesterday I drove past the beer garden in Estabrook Park. Hadn't been through there in years, and I…Read More was shocked by how the park has deteriorated and how the new biergarten is not in the most suitable place (or to my mind, most suitable building). But Hoyt has a beautiful facility, well located, and the chance to be a rousing success. When you do these things, you have to do them right. And I think the folks in Tosa have what it takes to do that.

If the parents were on "welfare," there wouldn't have been a $75 co-pay. I'm not making…Read More excuses for the mother, but that $75 was in addition to the money her family already pays for insurance. People on Medicaid don't have those kinds of co-pays.

Yes, as noted, the probation office finally did put a violation hold on him and he was sent to jail.…Read More But what happened after that is unknown. Since he wasn't charged, it's possible he was just released. But it's also possible that just having the BB gun was a probation violation, whether he was charged or not, and he may have gotten some mandatory lockup time. These records are not available to me.

Upon review, I wish to clarify a careless misstatement I made in this story, since corrected in the…Read More text. I originally said the DA didn't believe the state could prove the suspect had stolen the Nook reader and phone. I should have said (as it now reads), the DA did not believe he could prove the suspect "knew the Nook and display phone were stolen."
That is not splitting hairs. Obviously, the two items were stolen – the police proved that. The real question was not even whether the man in custody had stolen them himself but whether he was knowingly in possession of stolen property. That was the charge sought.
Because both items had been stolen long before but those thefts had not been reported and hence not investigated – and because the suspect doggedly stuck to his story that he didn't know they were stolen – the DA was probably right to decline that charge.

Thank you, Will, and thank you, Engberg Anderson, for brightening up everyone's days on North…Read More Avenue. A bold design, and it worked.

Rocket Baby is a fine addition to North Avenue and deserves recognition. I do not think that the…Read More appropriate award should be a historic preservation award. In pushing the envelope to include this project in the category of historic preservation, we see another example of the Historic Preservation Commission losing their focus, which is preserving and protecting Wauwatosa's historic properties. A glaring example of that is their upcoming meeting on Monday at 5:30 at which they will use an inappropriate process to award a "certificate of appropriateness" to demolish the Eschweiler buildings. The public will not even be allowed to speak. This is how we celebrate Historic Preservation month in Wauwatosa.
